2008 Hands on History Camp

The Montana Heritage Commission will sponsor a History Camp this summer for youth ages 11 to 15. The camp will include a variety of learning experiences for young people, including a personal history research project, history and stories from the Alder Gulch area, and some fun hands-on living history projects.

Instructors for the camp will include Montana Heritage Commission staff Virginia City, Montana Historical Society staff, Living History interpreters, instructors, demonstrators and school teachers.

Campers will be housed at the historic Bonanza Inn in Virginia City. The Bonanza Inn was the First Madison County Courthouse, after which time it became a hospital operated by the Sisters of Charity until 1879.

The fee for the camp is $295 which includes five nights lodging, all meals and snacks, all activities, supplies and instruction. The fee also includes a ride on the train and a ticket to a performance at the Opera House.

Scholarships are also available - refer to Registration Form for information on how to apply. To receive a brochure and registration form by mail, please contact Dan Thyer at Dthyer@mt.gov or call (406) 843-5247.

We hope to see you in Virginia City this summer for History Camp!
