HISTORY CAMP BASED ON AMERICAL GIRL™ DOLLS
SPYT 112
This incredible camp is based on the stories of girls featured in American Girl books.  Each day, you will explore the period in history of the featured girl through activities, games, crafts and a few field trips.  On the day that you read from Samantha’s book, you will get a special tour the Moss Mansion designed just for you and you will dress in style with hats and gloves to attend a high tea party on the gardens of the mansion.  You’ll play games and participate in activities from the Victorian age.  Each day will hold new surprises.  At the end of the camp you will go home with 5 American Girl paperback books, a mini collectable American Girl doll of your choice and all of the wonderful projects that you make throughout the week.  You are encouraged to bring your American Girl dolls to class!  Class size is limited and there is an early registration deadline of May 31 at 5p.m.

HEALTH CAREER CAMP

The medical field abounds with exciting careers! Health Careers Camp offers
youth a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of medicine from the vantage point of a medical professional. Students will experience the world of medical training at Montana State University- Billings College of Technology, and be introduced to the variety of educational opportunities for students in the health-related fields. Tours and interactive experiences at St.Vincent Healthcare will enable students to see the high tech world of medicine in action. Activities at the Mansfield Health Education Center will allow students to participate in distance medicine and Telehealth demonstrations.  A medical disaster drill will challenge students to think through medical roles and responses. Lunch and stank provided.

CHICKS DIG SCIENCE I

Girlfriends, lets get together for a potpourri of pretty and practical science observations and experiments for CHICKS WHO DIG SCIENCE.  We will record and assemble our scientific inspirations in our own journals (magnificently decorated by our talented selves!)  We will benefit from the expertise of fabulous female guest speakers working in science and have lots of fun making lip balm, glitter wands and crystals (after all…diamonds are a girls best friend). You’ll make new friends, learn how life science, physical science and earth science can help you expand your mind and give you a perfect complexion.  Yes, you can be cute and smart!
Instructor:  Carla Garner - Last year Mrs. Garner won a National Award for the most Creative and Innovative summer program in the US for her Crime Scene Investigation Billings Camp.  She has been an elementary school teacher for 31 years grades 1, 3 and 5.  She’s one of the coolest chicks in science you’ll ever meet!!

CHICKS DIG SCIENCE II

Girls, let’s spend a week together exploring the wide, wonderful world we live in.  We’ll do this in a variety of ways, including cosmology, observational astronomy, mythology, art & rocket science.  We will seek to understand the birth of the universe and investigate the mysteries of the night sky.  To complement our scientific knowledge, we will look at the night sky through other cultural perspectives.  We will incorporate art in science—using our unique talents, we will paint or sculpt or otherwise model our view of the universe.  Finally, we will all be rocket scientists—we will design water rockets and use these to launch & safely retrieve “eggstronauts”.  You’ll make fun new friends, meet fabulous women who are passionate about science, and learn cool new ways of understanding our world.  Can’t wait to see you there!
Instructor:  Dr. Stephanie Morrison is possibly the coolest science chick on the planet.  She’s the one who came up with the great idea for Chicks in Science.  She teaches at Friendship House and is passionate about getting and keeping girls interested in science.

This exciting course explores the challenging world of animation.  Games, movies, TV, and the internet all use animation to captivate their audience, students use Adobe Flash CS3 software to build 2 dimensional motion graphics.  Students will be introduced to animation topics including character and environment design.

Topics covered will include fly tying, fly casting, knots, introduction to fly fishing gear, safety, etiquette/ethics, hooking/playing landing fish, what fish eat, fly selection, and more.  On the last day Grandparents and Grandkids are invited to join in fun and practice casting fly tying with their kids.  And of course ice-cream will be served on the last day of camp.

It’s never too early to start learning about money and how to manage it.  Kids on Campus has partnered with Valley Federal Credit to create this fun camp where you’ll go through the process of picking out a new car, qualifying for credit and applying for a loan (including an interview with a loan officer), you’ll visit an insurance agent to find out the options for insuring your new car.  Then you’ll register your vehicle and get a title.  And on the last day of camp you’ll celebrate all you’ve learned with a fabulous barbeque!  Ok so, buying the car part is pretend…but everything you’ll learn is real and you’ll be way ahead of everyone else when it comes time to purchase your first new car!  This camp will be very interactive and will include field trips to a car dealership, a bank, an insurance company and the motor vehicle office.
Instructor:  Tammy Dayton, Business Development Director for Valley Federal Credit Union 30 years in the financial field, including experience as a lender at both banks and credit unions.  She’s really great at making difficult financial concepts easy to understand.

Enjoy an overnight stay at the Montana State University Billings Library.  Ever wanted to be loud in a library and get locked inside overnight?  Then come join us for a night of fun.  We will be watching movies in our personal movie theatre, eating popcorn and dots,  play capture the flag in the library, play a couple of games of disco “bookshelf” bowling, don’t forget some outdoor kickball and flashlight tag within the park. We can’t go the night without Pizza and doughnuts for breakfast – just enough sugar to keep you going for the next day.  We will make sure we have plenty of snacks to make it through the night.  Bring your sleeping bag and pillow and bring along your favorite nighttime snack to share with some new friends.

CSI:  CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION BILLINGS
SPYT 103
This camp is so great that last year, the North American Association of Summer Sessions (NAASS) Creative and Innovative Award chose it as the best summer program in the United States.  THAT’S HUGE.    In this camp you will solve mysteries using science.  In a computer lab you will visit the FBI’s crime scene investigation website, you will do fingerprinting, plaster casting, collecting data and comparing, handwriting analysis, chromatography, tracking, fiber analysis, hair samples, blood drop analysis (we won’t use real blood!).  Just like on TV, you will solve a real crime using science and your powers of deduction.  Class size is limited so register early.

CSI II :  ADVANCED CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION BILLINGS

As in CSI I, you will be using your skills in science and your powers of deduction to actually solve “crimes”.  In addition to practicing the science outlined in CSI I, campers in CSI II will learn about DNA, one of the most advanced and exciting pieces of evidence used to solve crimes.  This class is going to be jam packed with fun, inspirational activities that combine problem solving and laughter to learn about one of today’s hottest sciences.  Class size is limited.

LETS MAKE A MOVIE
SPYT 118 & 166
In the space of just one week, kids will learn the basics of movie making and use these skills to collaboratively create an original short movie.  They will explore storytelling as a means of communication and entertainment, produce images and artwork to prepare for their movie project (learning the importance of preparation for such projects), learn the basics of shooting and editing and then put those skills into practice on the set of their own movie!  At the end of the week kids will take away a copy of their original movie.Instructor: Jared Siess, a Billings filmmaker, writer and actor who works as the Media Literacy Coordinator at Friendship House.

KIDS COMPUTERS AND MORE
SPYT 105
The two day event is a partnership between Montana State University Billings and Computer 4 Kids.  During camp the kids will work with staff and volunteers and learn to assemble a computer.  They will learn how to install software and how to connect printers and CD drives, and they will learn to identify and correct basic hardware problems.  The curriculum also includes a lesson in basic word processing and a course on basic electrical safety.  In an effort to maximize the positive impact of this camp only one registration per household is allowed.
This event is open to middle school kids. Parents can drop their children off between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. both days.  The fun will begin at 9:00 a.m., and conclude at 4:00 p.m. each day.  Parents should prepare a sack lunch and snacks for their children both days.  Once the students arrive at the Downtown Campus, they will not be allowed to leave the campus facilities unsupervised.

EVERYTHING ART
SPYT
This camp for aspiring young artists offers a variety of fun activities in visual arts, theater arts, music and even a little culinary art!  Creativity abounds at Everything Art camp through projects such as watercolor paintings, clay sculptures, mosaics, handmade rhythm instruments, skits and much more.  Some examples of the great things you’ll do in this camp include, painting, sculpting, drawing, mosaic, jewelry making, acting games, improvisational activities, skits and scenes, singing, creating and playing rhythm instruments, dancing, cheese and cracker sculpture, fruit pizza, cookie decorating and vegi bouquets.  On Friday from 12:30 – 1:00p we’ll have an art show for your family so they can see all the cool things we made in camp, then you get to take your projects home.
Instructor:  Jackalynn Snow is an English and Theatre teacher at Skyview High School.  She was educated at the University of Montana Western and graduated with honors with a Bachelors of Science in English and a minor in Drama.  She has two years of counseling experience with SED youth and has also led camps, tutored, directed plays, worked at a Pre-School, and is First Aid and CPR certified.  Jackalynn has been married for 8 years to Cory Snow, and the couple is expecting their first child in August.  She pursues multiple hobbies including writing, photography, cooking, hiking, singing, and acting.

CRAZY CHEMISTRY

We’ll learn about all the fun stuff in a lab through lots of hands on activities.  At the end of the day campers will have lab gear to take home and experiment with. Learn what marvelous things can happen when you mix chemicals together.  Campers get lots of hands on time in the lab mixing up fun chemical combos.  Take home your very own blacklight and slime. Learn about some of the everyday items that have their roots in chemistry.  Experiment with more chemical reactions and take home your very own solar cooker and Professor Beaker Dude.

Kids Culinary World Tour Session I or II

If you like to cook you’re going to LOVE this camp!!  You will study and create food from 5 countries; Norway, Germany, India, France, and the Mediterranean.  In this camp, you will learn from a professional Chef to plan menus, shop, and prepare meals from around the world.  You will also learn kitchen safety and kitchen chemistry.  You will make and serve your own outstanding lunches every day.  This camp will help you develop life skills for good health and safety in the kitchen and fun creative ways to cook for your friends and family.  And you will get to learn about the food and culture from five of the world’s most fascinating places.
Instructor:  Carolyn Story studied with master chefs in House and Germany.  After completing her Hotel Administration degree at UNLV she worked for the Mirage Resorts.  She loves sharing her passion for food with kids and is one of our most popular camp instructors.

No Boys Allowed:  A Slumber Party Camp for Girls
SPYT 113
This has been one of our most popular camps for girls over the past few years.  Come to “No Boys Allowed” and find out how to throw the most fun and memorable slumber party for your friends.  You’ll get enough ideas for several nights of great fun, and you’ll get to try out the ideas in the class.  Bring your friends and be prepared to make new ones!  This course will be held in 4 half-day sessions.  Each day, you will get to experience several fun sleepover activities.  Each day will include a get-to-know-you game, a beauty treatment (foot soaks, face masks, manicures, hair styling), a performance activity (karaoke, skits, dancing, etc…), a food treat (an innovative snack or breakfast—if facilities allow), and a game, art and/or craft activity.  You will receive a packet with descriptions of ideas and activities.  This is a wonderful camp to help you get over shyness and learn how to be the most fabulous party hostess in your class!

Robotics

If you like to build things with your hands, or like solving problems, this is the camp for you. This camp is ideal if you like to know how to make things work, crawl, roll, blink, buzz or even think!   The camp dives deep into the world of robotics, giving you a chance to design, assemble and program complex robots that communicate, move and think on their own. During the camp we’ll build and program  different types of robots: using Lego Mindstorms®.  You’ll learn how to build, program and control each of these – making them obey your every command. Then put them to the test in our Robot tournaments.
Instructor: Regina Cain and the Robotics Gurus from iTech.  Regina is a Systems Analyst at Montana State University.~ She grew up at the start of the computer age with punch cards and large mainframes.~ Getting started in high school she has pursued a life studying and working with people to help them understand computers.~ Regina has worked for several large companies including Microsoft throughout her career.~

Advanced Robotics
SPYT
New this year, Advanced Robotics Camp! You must have completed the Beginners Robotics course or have learned fundamental programming, how sensors work, and using math and science to solve robotic problems. In this robotics camp you will use the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot to build even more awesome robots than was in the Beginners course.~ The course will still include calculating gear ratios, and programming robots to move on their own! Students will practice engineering principles to create mechanisms for specific challenges - and ultimately compete to test their solutions. With more the many parts, motors, sensors, and Bluetooth technology, the sky is the limit.  Working in small teams, students in this robotics camp will compete in fun challenges. Each day will bring a new challenge, and your team’s robot will have to morph to better adapt and compete. As an advanced student you will have the opportunity to learn about building complex robotic sensors, advanced robot arms, drive trains, and programming “smarter” robots. ~If you have a Bluetooth enabled phone, iPod, or PSP. you will learn how to teach the robot to communicate with it.  You must bring your own robot to camp!

On the Move:  Making Things That Go on Land and in the Air
SPYT 150
Using toys to study physics of “things that go” in air and on land.  Day l:  Paper blimps and airplanes, Day 2:  balsa planes, Day 3: bottle rockets, Day 4: balloon powered cars, Day 5: perfecting final models (based on data collection of trials for vehicles in days 1-4) and RACES!!  You’ll build things, launch things, race things, make things fly.  This class is full of surprises…and you just never know what might get dropped out of the sky!  Seriously…out of the sky!!!

Readers Theater Camp

In this creative camp you will plan, write, rehearse, stage, and perform a Reader’s Theater script, based upon any area from science, social studies to language arts.  Imagine that!!  You’ll use drama to learn more about dinosaurs, math, animals and their habitats. weather….the sky is the limit.  Because you’ll be having so much fun, you won’t even realize that you’ll be improving your knowledge and building research skills.  This is an active camp that will keep you learning and laughing everyday.  This class is for children with all reading and writing ability levels in grades 2-6.  No previous dramatic experience is needed.  Basic drama and poetry techniques will be taught within the class.  You will create a script and through repeated practice will become fluent readers and performers by the last class.  On the last day of camp, we’ll put on a performance.  No costumes or supplies are necessary.  Just bring enthusiasm, creativity and a willingness to cooperate.
Instructor:  Julie Hippler has a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Illinois Statue University,  and a Master of Education in Interdisciplinary Studies from MSU-Billings.  She has
19 years experience in regular and special education in grades 2-8 and is currently a 2nd grade teacher at Central Heights Elementary.  She has taught summer camps using Reader’s Theater and Poetry with the Alberta Bair Theater.

The excitement of exploration comes alive in this amazing week long camp.  Investigate trails, parks, and the great outdoors in and discover the secrets of animal tacks, bugs, birds, and much more. Using a combination of games, activities, and lessons the Jane Ferguson Nature Camp provides fun and enjoyable outdoor learning by utilizing the terrific educational opportunities available outside.  Our curriculum uses hands-on training in an outdoor setting to enhance students’ knowledge of science, history and art.  Each day begins with students meeting at the high school and than leaving for a field trip where they will hike and explore.

a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of energy development from the vantage point of a professional. Students will experience the world of energy training at Montana State University- Billings College of Technology, and be introduced to the variety of educational opportunities for students in the energy fields. Fieldtrips and interactive activities at PPL Montana – J.E. Corette Plant, Northwestern Energy, Stillwater Mining Company - Refinery, ExxonMobil Billings Refinery and the Northern Plains Resource Council Office Building will enable students to see the high tech world of energy in action. Each student will receive a backpack and a Kids on Campus t-shirt.  Lunch provided.

Step into the shoes of a rocket scientist and learn the fundamentals of propulsion and rocket design. Discover the fundamentals involved in launching rockets.  Explore the concepts of altitude and altitude tracking and begin to build your own rocket. Finish the construction of your first rocket and launch it during this hands on look at rocketry and space travel.  Campers will learn about Newton’s laws of motion, about the history of space travel and how some space vehicles work. Campers will focus on recovery systems for rockets with a continuing exploration of Newton’s laws of motion and how they apply to rockets in flight.  They will build and launch their own rockets and discover more about the solar system that they might one day be able to explore on their own. Campers will continue their exploration of rocketry in this hands-on program by focusing on rocket transportation systems and rocket staging.  This will finish up with rocket building from the previous day, launch bottle rockets, make their own helicopters and launch several model rockets.
